I’ve shared this before, but my experience as a college player was more like an internship in offensive football. Surely, there were other places like Miami, Florida, or even Stanford at the time that had flashier systems and notoriety, but in terms of a broad system to learn that would give a baseline for EVERY system I would come across as a coach, there wasn’t a better experience as a learner. More to the point, there were methods I was exposed to that were simply ahead of the curve — so much so that even the methods of measurement have applicability more than 30 years later.

My senior season, I was responsible for the decerning and inputting our weekly passing game quality control metrics. The Quality Control System we used comprised of 65 different metrics that were tracked weekly, and of course, gave us the means to measure across both historical and market (the rest of the NCAA) standards Today, I’ll go over some of those categories, the major thoughts behind them, and trends that I feel would helpful to understand. I’ll cover what I feel are advancements, then regression, and how they affect football situations - and ultimately, winning.
